And justice for all...

Please don’t let the floodgates behind Lady Justice’s blindfold open to allow a stream of disgust and disappointment to carve rivers down her fair face. In 1996 when the RCMP attempted to investigate if Mr. Mulroney had any Swiss accounts associated with the Airbus scandal that Karlheinz Schreiber was involved with, he sued the RCMP for libel in which he received a $2.1 million settlement. During the lawsuit, on April 17, 1996, while under oath, he had said his relationship with Mr. Schreiber was only casual and had only met with Mr. Schreiber once or twice for coffee since leaving office. What’s interesting now is how Mr. Mulroney himself has now admitted to receiving a sum of money from Mr. Schreiber between 1993 and 1994 after he had left office.

“I realize I made a serious error in judgment in receiving the payment in cash for this assignment, even though it was decidedly not illegal …That mistake in judgment was mine alone. I apologize and I accept full responsibility for it.” 1

If Mr. Mulroney had admitted to this in 1996 during his libel suit, Mr. Mulroney would not have received his $2.1 million dollar settlement from the RCMP. Whether or not Mr. Mulroney is charged with any wrongdoings in accepting the $300,000 (or $225,000 according to Mulroney), he lied to get the $2.1 million. Rightfully so, he should return that money to taxpayers and give an official apology for conning Canadians of our tax dollars.

If he is found guilty of any wrong doing, then he should be charged and thrown in jail just like every other criminal, regardless of his status as a former Prime Minister.

In any case, you Mr. Mulroney, owe us $2.1 million and an apology.

Just something to think about.

"This great evil, where does it come from?
How did it steal into the world?
What seed, what root did it grow from?
Who's doing this? Who's killing us?
Robbing us of life and light.
Mocking us with the sight of what we might have known.
Does our rule benefit the Earth?
Does it help the grass to grow? or the sun to shine?
Is this darkness in you too?
Have you passed through this night?"

Dissent = Treason?

Naomi Wolf points out in this well written article that there are steps required to close down a democracy and slowly our neighbours to the South are inching towards a closed society. She supports her argument very well by drawing many parallels between Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and our neighbours to the south. By inducing fear, turning dissent into treason, creating gulags, spying on ordinary citizens, creating thug castes (much like the Black shirts), harassing citizens' groups, arbitrarily putting people on lists that remove their rights and privileges, and muddying the press with propaganda, they have initiated the corrosion of the foundations that their nation was built upon. With House Resolution 1955, the fear is that number 9 on Naomi's list "Dissent equals treason" may be one step closer to reality. Dennis Kucinich recently argued that Resolution 1955 is unconstitutional, going on to say “If you understand what this bill does, it really sets the stage for further criminalization of protest.”

This is indeed troublesome not only for our neighbours down south but also for the rest of the world. I don't even want to imagine what they may do to the rest of the world if their leader is able to rule with absolute power in a society where dissent and treason are the same.

I promise I'll post more local Canadian things in coming days, I've been reading too many of these darn presidential candidacy stories lately.

Remember 'Vote Bart Simpson for Class President'?

Remember that episode of the Simpsons when Bart was running for class president against Martin Prince? Bart's shock campaign was so strong that everyone thought Martin had no chance and a few votes for Bart would've given him the win. Ironically, only 2 people voted - Martin and Wendell who both voted for Martin... Martin wins Class President.

Read this and you'll understand why I reference that episode.

The man makes a pretty valid point...
